Some facts about J Pole
The Wire J-Pole Antenna is ¾ wavelengths long
total. The end ½ wavelength radiates radio waves like a vertically
mounted dipole antenna. Unlike a dipole it has high impedance (about 2000
to 4000 ohms) because it is end fed. The first ¼ wavelength of
twinlead is an impedance matching section required to match it to the low
impedance coax. A ¼ wavelength feedline transforms high impedance
to low impedance. The coax is soldered 1 ¼ inches from the end of
the twinlead to match 50 ohms impedance.
The 2 Meter Wire J-Pole Antenna SWR will also
function from 440 to 450 MHz but unfortunately its gain is ¼ of that on
2 meters (-6 decibels) and the maximum vertical radiation is at
44°. All 2 Meter J-Pole antennas operate equivalent to rubber
duck (compact) antennas on 440 MHz. The only true dual band J-Pole antennas use
an impedance trap or second radiating element for 440 MHz. This is why we
do not call our J Pole a dual band J Pole.
When installed vertically the Wire J-pole Antenna
radiates the same in all horizontal directions with maximum vertical radiation
about 25° above the horizon.
The coax used is also a major consideration.
